Genesis 27-28; Matthew 8:18-34 (by MA)

*Gen 27-28, Matt. 8:18-34*
*Favouritism in families*
*[[Gen 27:4]] NHEB* Make me savory food, such as I love, and bring it to me, that I may eat, and that my soul may bless you before I die.”
Parents should bless their children without conditions. Isaac put conditions for a blessing which were met by Jacob instead of Esau, the right owner of the blessing.
*Favoritism in families cause great rifts.*
*[[Gen 25:28]] NHEB* Now Isaac loved Esau, because he ate his venison. Rebekah loved Jacob.
*[[Gen 27:14]] NHEB* He went, and got them, and brought them to his mother. His mother made savory food, such as his father loved.
Here was a mother, working craftily to secure some blessing for her favorite son. It can be argued that Rebecca knew God's promises and was working hard to fulfill them. It could also be said that Esau's wives brought so much pain to her that she worked hard that Esau did not get the blessing. But when God makes a promise, we are not allowed to use crooked means to work it out. God would have worked out His word for this family without our crooked efforts and following confusions and pain!
Parents, take the pains to balance the love for your children. Let God work out their destinies Himself.
*Dual personality!*
*[[Gen 27:22]] NHEB* Jacob went near to Isaac his father. He felt him, and said, “The voice is Jacob’s voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau.”
This is the dilemma of the natural child of God. I see it in my life and in the lives of those close to me. We say one thing but when people come close to us, they touch a different person. Our walk does not match up with our talks! Two people in one! A lot of confusion.
Deliver us from evil, oh Lord.
*But watch out! The blessing follows the birthright!*
*[[Gen 27:36]] NHEB* He said, “Isn’t he rightly named Jacob? For he has supplanted me these two times. He took away my birthright. See, now he has taken away my blessing.” He said, “Haven’t you reserved a blessing for me?”
When we as believers in the Lord, live as we should, the blessing of God follows us. When we sell our birthright, whoever buys the birthright gets the blessing. Esau sold his birthright for some lentil sauce and bread. May God keep us from such fatal and sometimes eternal mistakes.
*Family crisis..... It didn't start today!*
*[[Gen 27:41]] NHEB* Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father blessed him. Esau said in his heart, “The days of mourning for my father are at hand. Then I will kill my brother Jacob.”
For almost all their adult lives, these twins were enemies. The offender of course ran for his life with the accomplice (his mother's) help! Talk of family crisis. Lies, deception, fear dominated most of Jacob's adult life.
*When you wake up, say thank you!*
*[[Gen 28:20]] NHEB* Jacob vowed a vow, saying, “If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and clothing to put on, ... *[[Gen 28:22]] NHEB* then this stone, which I have set up for a pillar, will be God’s house. Of all that you will give me I will surely give the tenth to you.”
If God will ...... Then I will ......
When humans set conditions for God, it leads to a lot of struggles. It is God who should set conditions for us. God's dealing with us is based on grace. The angels appeared, God affirmed His presence to Isaac but Isaac was a man of conditions. Instead of waking up to say thank you Lord, he woke up to put more conditions for the deal!
Lord, every day I wake up from sleep, I say thank you. It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed. Thank you for keeping us all through the night. Thank you for sustaining is. Thank you!
*WHY and WHEN TO FOLLOW JESUS?*
*[[Mat 8:19]] NHEB* Then a scribe came, and said to him, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.”
*[[Mat 8:21]] NHEB* And another of the disciples said to him, “Lord, allow me first to go and bury my father.”
The scribe wanted to go anywhere with Jesus but the answer of Jesus shows that the reason is the problem. The message Bible brings out the sentiments of his reply
Matt. 8:20 Jesus was curt: “Are you ready to rough it? We’re not staying in the best inns, you know.” We did not hear from him again.
The other disciple? Was he asking for a break or just telling Jesus when he will be ready to serve him fully? He was already a disciple! Again Jesus answer was that he should do First things first (vs 22, Msg)!
It almost agrees with our OT lesson. God must be served on his own terms! The why and when of following Jesus is not your business. You follow Him and He will sort out the rest.
*Fear or faith!*
*Matt 8:24 - 26 And suddenly a violent storm came up on the sea, so much that the boat was covered with the waves, but he was asleep. They came to him, and woke him up, saying, “Save us, Lord. We are dying.”And he said to them, “Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?” Then he got up, rebuked the wind and the sea, and there was a great calm*
A reminder to all Jesus followers!
You will get into the storm even with Jesus in your boat!
But, fear not. Rise up and in the authority of the word, speak to the storm..... At least that's one thing I can see that the Lord expected them to do! Like a song writer said.....no water can swallow the ship where lies, the master of oceans....!!!!
Fear not, speak the word of faith.
Lord, fear seems to wrap it's cold hands round my heart when I get into storms.... Big ones and small ones!
I rise up today, not frantically removing the water from my boat but I Arise in faith and in the name Jesus.... I speak to the storm! PEACE, BE STILL!!! Amen.
