Genesis 27&28, Matthew 8
Genesis 27-28
Sigh.
This is a hard one for me because my sympathies are completely with Esau. But what is interesting to me is that the birthright is different from the blessing. All these years, I'd always thought that they were one and the same. Unfortunately, because Esau despised his birthright, he lost his blessing too. Perhaps if he had valued what he had and guarded it jealously, he wouldn't have fallen victim to the deceit of his mother and brother.
It bothers me though, that Rachel so obviously preferred his twin brother to him.
28:6
The issue of Esau's canaanite wife comes up again. Who we are yoked with can have serious and far reaching consequences
Matthew 8:22
"Let the dead bury their own dead." I'd always thought the dead referred to the actual dead, but now I see that Jesus was referring to those that had not yet received new life through him. In other words, do jot concern yourself too much with the affairs of this world.
